LESSONS & STUDENT WORK

Below are some of the lessons I created and used to teach basic coding skills to students at Ampersand School along with work samples from a few students after each lesson.

Week Two

Weeks Three & Four

Reflection

These lessons were a part of a six-week series. The initial three weeks were a lot of teacher-directed lessons to provide students the foundations of web design using HTML and CSS. During the last two weeks, students were working on their web pages using the tools learned from the previous lessons. By providing access to learning these foundational computer science skills, students began paying attention to small details and were utilizing problem-solving skills whenever a "bug" or error would arise. Most of these students have a learning disability and or have Autism Spectrum Disorder making it difficult for them to finish tasks or focus so for them to learn and build their websites was a great accomplishment. Most importantly, the skills they learned during our lessons got them excited to learn more on their own which increases their chances of being prepared for the jobs that are available now and will be available in the future. Access to coding and computer science gives them a chance to get ahead and use their unique abilities to create and innovate!

Week One

Overview

Students at Ampersand would not have had the opportunity to learn the foundations of coding had I not provided the following lessons to them. Most of the students had some knowledge about what coding or programming is and knew that it is what people use to create video games and applications. Despite their knowledge of the existence of code, none of them had been given the opportunity to learn about it on a consistent basis. Some of them mentioned that they did one hour of code at their old school but did not learn how to actually build things, such as a website. The lessons below were created and delivered to provide students access to learning skills that will better prepare them for the tech-driven world of today and in the future.
