INTRODUCTORY LESSON

This lesson was the first to introduce and explicitly teach about the habit of mind: Managing Impulsivity. During this experience, students watched two videos showing examples of what impulsive behavior looks like and the how it can have drastic consequences, such as in the Chicken Little movie where there was significant destruction due to multiple characters reacting impulsively.

Students learned about what managing impulsivity does and does not look like and how to use management of one's impulses to make better decisions and actions. By the end of the lesson, students were using words such as, "having self-control" and "being patient" as ways to manage their impulses. Their reflection sheets also indicated that they were on their way to understanding what managing impulsivity means and how to implement it in their lives.

Reflection

Students were beginning to understand the concept of what it means to manage impulsivity. By the end of the lesson, they were able to identify ways to manage impulsivity which is what was added to the green anchor chart that was hung up in the classroom as a reminder to help them whenever they feel they are not managing their impulses. Since most of the students actually have impulsive behavior that is exacerbated from having Autism or ADHD, teaching them what it looks like and does not look like along with ways to manage their impulses is an important first step to recognizing when they may be acting impulsively and how to regain their self-control.
