STRATEGIES FOR PERSISTING

Once students learned the importance of a growth mindset and understanding the concept of neuroplasticity, how our brains are continually creating new pathways by learning and also from our habits, we were able to tie all of our learning back to the idea of never giving up, of persisting during easy and challenging times!

Below are images of different ways that I reinforced the mindset of persisting into everyday activities such as math and reading workshop. With the use of strategies, I was able to provide students ways to analyze their progress and know when to pivot if one strategy was not working for them. At the beginning of the 2015-16 school year, many of my first graders dealt with low self-esteem and lacked confidence in their ability to face challenges head-on. They gave up very quickly. With that, I realized having a "repertoire of problem-solving strategies" was key to teaching them how to successfully persist through challenges and to also learn about what works for them and to know when to try other options without resorting to getting upset and giving up (Costa & Kallick).
