GROWTH MINDSET

Using the belief that we can grow our brains to encourage persisting through challenges

In the beginning of the year, shortly after learning about the mindset of persisting, I introduced the concept of having a "Growth Mindest" versus a "Fixed Mindset" to my class. The goal was to explicitly teach them that intelligence is not something you are automatically born with, it is an aspect of yourself that you can grow and cultivate through continuous learning.

So we began a journey of learning how we can turn our fixed mindsets into growth mindsets by watching videos, having class discussions, reinforcing having a "growth mindset" during our morning meetings, and through our data trackers.

For a full week, at the end of the day, I showed them one episode of the Class Dojo Growth Mindset video series. We would have a class discussion about it, examples of similar situations that happened that day, and how we can apply what we learned the following day.

We read multiple books that all centered around persisting, whether it was about not giving up on an assignment, or learning to get along with others, or even practicing at home to reach goals. With this, we created data trackers that helped them visually see their progress and encourage them to keep going. I connected the belief that you can grow your brain but it requires perseverance and persistence, especially during difficult situations. These were ways that I continually reinforced the habit and mindset of persisting.

Reflection

Building the habit of persisting takes a lot of work, self-reflection, and self-awareness. By incorporating Growth Mindset lessons, goal setting, and utilizing various goal trackers my students were off to a great start. These trackers and charts were not looked upon as defeating but uplifting! My students were developing intrinsic motivation through the reward of seeing their progression academically as a direct result of their hard work. Connecting the belief of a Growth Mindset to the habit of Persisting made the learning process make more sense and more enjoyable.
